The UA chapter of the National Association of Women MBAs (NAWMBA) invited current UA students and alumni, as well as colleagues from Arizona State University and Thunderbird School of Global Management, to a career networking event at the Eller College Scottsdale campus in February.

Pathway to Success: Navigating Your Career Journey emphasized the role of women in business and featured a panel discussion and series of breakout sessions by job function, culminating in a happy hour networking session. The event not only gave students the chance to gain advice from successful women in their industry of choice, but also facilitated connections between those already in the working world.

“The panel discussion was a great way to present nine very different career paths and show the audience that there is no one-size-fits-all way to be a successful business woman, mother, wife, and friend,” said NAWMBA co-president Kelly Cummins. “The panelists were very candid in their responses and provided wonderful advice. The best lesson I learned during the panel was to define my boundaries and communicate them to others so that I know what my limits are.”

Cummins’s NAWMBA co-president Katie Freberg added that the breakout sessions “allowed students to ask two business leaders for general guidance on how to get your foot in the door. Having two women from different companies within the same job function gave the sessions an interesting dynamic.”

The event boasted some 100 attendees, including Eller College namesake Karl Eller and his wife Stevie, as well as Eller College National Board of Advisors member and attorney Martha Taylor Thomas. Cummins said that the event showed women in business that “you can create your own career path if you are clear on your personal and professional goals. Be open and communicate your wants and needs to yourself and those around you.”
