For the first time this year, the Eller College’s Undergraduate Professional Development Center declared February Career Month, creating a full slate of events and activities to help students focus attention on professional development.

This series—including workshops on careers in trading, grad school, federal employment, career planning, and resume reviews—culminated in Career Showcase, which brought Eller students together with 46 major corporations in an event hosted by Altria and Enterprise.

Coordinated and presented by Delta Sigma Pi and the Eller College Student Council, Career Showcase is the largest student-managed career fair in Arizona. Madeline Fitzgerald (BSBA Business Management ‘11) said, “I was able to network with recruiters, learn specifics about different positions, and hone in on what companies and positions I am interested in and wanted to pursue further.”

In conjunction with Career Showcase, the College also hosted a speed-networking event with employers. This offered students the chance to network, mingle, and ask questions of recruiters one-on-one before the hustle and bustle of the showcase. The event emphasized the hows and whys of networking, which Michael Wood, district manager from Altria described to them as “simply building a connection that becomes a contact in the future.”

The Eller MBA program also hosted a private networking session for employers specifically seeking to hire MBAs for internships and full-time employment.

“We always encourage students to follow up with the contacts they have made at Career Showcase,” said Eller director of professional development Sarah Diaz. “Taking that next step—going to an information session, forwarding a resume, applying for the internship or job online—is what ultimately leads to a job offer.”
